Folkestone, UK
Commissioned by the Folkestone Harbour & Seafront Development Company - the enterprise led by Sir Roger de Haan - Plot D-1 represents the third phase of the development that is seeking to regenerate this formerly derelict part of town.
Plot D-1 challenges the strict geometry of the masterplan’s crescents by opening gaps in the perimeter volume allowing sea views from every building and creating a relationship to the listed terrace opposite Marine Parade. The design is based around extensive terraces and balconies and a sheltered central communal garden with direct access to the beach.
The modular façade was conceived as a series of pre-fabricated load-bearing elements that reduce embodied carbon and withstand the harsh marine environment while the geometry optimizes self-shading of the exposed facades. The external terracotta finish reflects the varying light conditions giving the buildings an ever-changing appearance while the internal colour scheme is taken from the tones of the shingle beach.
